What is Buteyko

Buteyko is a natural way of helping those with asthma and other breathing problems. The system was developed in the 1950s by a Russian doctor called Konstantin Buteyko. He designed a number of breathing exercises that help control breathing and thus reduces the frequency and severity of symptoms.
In 1981, following clinical trials, the Russian authorities approved Buteyko for use as a treatment for asthma. Buteyko was brought to Australia after an Australian business man taken ill during a trip to Russia was treated with the Buteyko technique and improved dramatically. It is now widely used in Australia and New Zealand and is now becoming more well known in America and Europe.

Five scientific trials have all shown that those who used Buteyko were able to significantly reduce their need for medication. The results of a scientific trial published in Australia in 1998 showed that asthma sufferers using the technique were able to reduce their need for reliever inhalers by an average of approximately 90% in less than three months by practising the method.
